Trace’s hyena was chomping at the bit like an out-of-control stallion the entire time he was working while Jewel was in the bar. It was powerfully unfair that he had to work when things seemed to be, maybe possibly, turning a corner with the dark-haired beauty.

He’d been pissed when she showed up at the bar, still nursing his wounded heart. Then all his anger had fled when he’d seen her facing off alone with the FSA. Her brother had come for her, putting his job above family loyalty, which was all too familiar to Trace. His own family had turned their backs on him when he’d broken his promise to his hyena alpha to never use magic. He had a myriad of regrets, but he didn’t regret saving a life.

Jewel had essentially saved Willow’s life and had lost everything because of it. She’d had her world turned upside down more than once in a short amount of time, and he’d been unreasonably angry when she hadn’t rushed into his arms the moment she arrived back in Cider Falls. He was a jackass of epic proportions and didn’t deserve the opportunity to spend time with her. But she was giving him that exact chance by sticking around and waiting for his shift to be over.

Exhaustion plucked at him, but he pushed it away. He hadn’t slept well since she’d left him standing in the middle of the road the night they met. He had zero plans to sleep tonight. He’d stay up and talk to her as long as she wanted.

His hyena butted him from the inside, demanding the discontinuation of work and the spending-of-time with their mate.

Soon.

“How’s she doing?”

Trace turned and faced Rehlik. “She seems okay. I spoke to her for a few seconds when I brought drinks over to her table.” She was sad for sure—anyone would be considering what she’d faced—but she smiled at him and made him feel like he was the only male in the world.

“I want to ask you about your plans with her, but I know it’s too soon.”

Trace nodded. “My brain has already circled around all that future stuff a hundred times in the last hour. We’ll move forward however she wants to, in whatever time is right for us.”

Rehlik smiled. “That’s the right answer for sure. I told her to meet with me tomorrow to discuss her work. I’d like her to join the patrols. Her training and experience will be invaluable.”

“Definitely.”

“You need to be at the meeting anyway, so you can come with her. If you’d like to take a few days off work to spend with her, let me know and I’ll get you covered.”

“That would be great.”

“Consider it done.” Rehlik rapped his knuckles on the bar, gave him a nod, then left.

Well, he had a few days off. That was definitely good news. Even if he had a meeting to attend with Jewel tomorrow, he could also make the case that she should have a few days off before she started her job as well.
